74591331In July the Boston Globe reported ‘ a group of influential senators ‘ were seeking to have alternative therapies included in health care reform.

The two main sponsors of the senate amendment are, Senator Tom Harkin (D) Iowa, a long time proponent of alternative medicine and Senator Barbara Mikulski (D) Maryland.

This measure would prohibit insurance companies from discriminating against health care providers who offer alternative therapies for treatment.

Senate aides say this amendment is designed to provide coverage for alternative medicine.

This amendment is supported across party lines by proponents like Senator Mike Enzi (R) Wyoming.

These alternative therapies include but are not limited to Chiropractic,  Acupuncture,  Ayurvedic Medicine,  Massage,  Mind-Body Medicine,  Lifestyle Modification, Homeopathic Medicine.

Some health care providers allow for some alternative therapy coverage. This coverage comes at a high cost to the consumer.

38 % of adults in the U.S. use alternative therapies and that number is climbing as more and more Americans are discovering the health benefits of these alternative therapies.

Most Americans turn away from traditional medicine and to alternative therapies when they become disillusioned by the promise of relief commonly missing in traditional medicine.  These people commonly suffer from painful conditions like back and neck pain,  arthritis,  joint pain and other musculoskeletal problems along with many other ailments that plague so many in our nation.

Senator Harkin notes that alternative therapies are commonly less expensive than traditional approaches and can be pursued instead of drugs or medical interventions in some cases.

The Senate Committee on Health, Education , Labor and Pensions has agreed to this measure leaving the final decision to the Senate Finance Committee. Whether the final reform bill contains the same language as the original amendment remains to be seen.

” Choose each day to be blissful and complete, a whole person well cared for by you”
