team1‘ SB 731 has initiated massage regulation for California Statewide Voluntary Massage Certification, thereby allowing for work in multiple California locations without the need for multiple permits and fees. ‘

CAMTC:   http://www.camtc.org/

There will be established criteria for the Certified Massage Therapist (CMT) and Certified Massage Practitioner (CMP) professional titles.

Massage Therapist who currently use the title of  ‘certified’ in their title will have the option to obtain ‘Certification’ through CAMTC and maintain that title or maintain their local records and permits and delete the term ‘Certified’ in their professional title.

According to the CAMTC web site ‘ initially there will be some certification provisions for special circumstances’.

This will make a significant difference for Massage Therapist in California who are tired of paying permit fees for every boundary they encounter. Now we will also have the added benefit of knowing we can work in our own state free from multiple city fees that apply to Massage Therapy and its practice.

For example city laws are widely varied across county lines, Palm Springs requires 100 hours of Massage Therapy education to be licensed in their city while in San Diego County city law requires 500 hours and NCTMB certification.

Every city is different which makes working in multiple locations almost impossible.

Qualifications are listed on the CAMTC web site and I strongly encourage anyone interested in this topic to visit CAMTC you will find the link above.

The different requirements of certification for the titles listed above are:

CMT or Certified Massage Therapist qualifications as of this writing include 500 massage education hours, 250 of those hours obtained through approved schools.

Proof of passing one of three of the following tests, MBLx, NCBTM or NCBTMB.

The latter you can read more about on this site.  In addition to passing one of the three test,  you must also provide official tax return copies or local government permits and proof of employment as a Massage Therapist during all or part of at least 2 calender years.

The level of Certified Massage Practitioner, CMP,  requires the applicant to have 250 massage education hours, 100 of those hours in the following curriculum subjects, all from a single approved school:

*Anatomy & Physiology

*Contraindications

* Health & Hygiene

* Business & Ethics

When submitting an application for certification you must be 18 years of age or older. The application fee is $150.00 and non-refundable. After speaking with a member of CAMTC, I was assured that measures will be in place for transcript pre-approval for those who may not be sure if their transcripts meet the curriculum requirements.

Applications will be accepted starting August 1, 2009 with the first certificate tentatively being awarded on September 1, 2009 at the State Capitol in Sacramento.

As you can imagine, this has been a large undertaking for all of those involved. Remember to check the official web site linked on this page for any updates or changes.

CAMTC will be providing more and more information  on their web site as August 1st approaches.

The Portals Application on the CAMTC web site can give you in greater detail a list of the ’special circumstances’ and ‘grandfathering’ that will take place as more applications are submitted.

    i work in mission viejo and my boss at the spa i work at told me today that she spoke to someone from camtc and was told it’s still voluntary so your city still has control. in short, she told me i would still have to pay my city permit renewal even if i become certified by the state. i thought this bill was to help keep from getting charged in every city??? anybody know if this is correct or is everyone still confused with what’s supposed to happen

  4. Follow this link to the FAQ page for the Camtc web site. The sixth and seventh questions from the top should answer your question. The web site is being updated, be sure to go back frequently to stay up to date on any changes.

    Good Luck!!!

  5. This is a time of great change, and things are going to be confusing for awhile as things get sorted. I have to say that getting state of California certified was a great decision for me!
