Neo-Reichian massage is a modality designed to restore self awareness by re-unifying physical sensation with emotional experience.  Neo-Reichian massage teaches that individuals exhibit psychological conflicts which reveal themselves through physical manifestations.  These physical manifestations are displayed through posture, voice, movement and body stance (palms in or out).

The inspiration behind Neo-Reichian massage is Wilhelm Reich, an early 20th century psychoanalyst who was one of the pioneers behind psycho-corporal therapy.  During his research, Wilhelm Reich discovered many of the beliefs that dominate the practice of Neo-Reichian massage.  The core belief of this modality is that the body holds a memory of unresolved emotions and trauma which reveal themselves through tension, illness and spine alignment.

Psychic and sexual energy flow through the body in wave like motions proceeding from the pelvis to the very top of the head.  The flow of this energy can become blocked by muscle tension which then impedes the flow of sensation, breath, emotion and vitality.  When this circulation is blocked our freedom to enjoy the experiences around us is also blocked.  Muscle tension can occur in seven regions or segments of the body corresponding to muscle groups in the front, sides and back of the body.  These seven segments form seven rings individually called the ocular, oral, neck, upper thoracic, diaphragmatic, abdominal and pelvic.

A recipient of Neo-Reichian massage will experience, maybe for the first time, their own “body armor” and become aware of their “psycho-corporal link” . This link exist between muscle tension, perceived problems and daily life.  As a team, the Therapist and recipient will work together to achieve the goal of releasing tension and allow free flow of emotional energy through any area that was once restricted.

The massage will begin with a psych-corporal health questionnaire for documenting the recipients current state of health and physical health history.  This will help the Therapist determine the recipients course of treatment.  The Therapist will begin the massage at the head and work toward the feet, in a variation the Therapist may start at the core and work outward, dependent on the needs of the recipient.

During the massage the recipient will be instructed to concentrate on their breathing until they can perceive what is happening in their body and express it.  This will usually happen in the very first session but some individuals may require multiple sessions to achieve this goal.
