If you have been a body worker or therapist for a number of years, you may be aware of the dangers of ‘burnout’. However, those just entering the field can also find themselves subject to this debilitating condition. Often it sneaks up on us without warning and threatens to destroy the very spirit that drives our effectiveness.
I found myself dangerously close to that point when I became submerged in trying to build my business. Expectations can be so high that if we fail to achieve certain goals then we become disheartened or discouraged.
What are realistic goals to set that safeguard us from destructive emotions?
First, just focus on getting regular clients. This doesn’t have to be in any large number. Even just a handful of return clients will validate what you do as worthwhile. For what seemed the longest time I saw as many return clients as I could count on one hand. At first this seemed like a failure. Why am I not attracting more clients? Is this all I can expect to get? Then I flipped the coin and realized that these clients came BACK to me because I provided what they needed. Given the choice of salons they had, they chose ME! I had to take comfort and encouragement for that.
Second, be sure to engage in activities that will get your name out there. Even if you don’t receive clients straight away, the more your name and face is out there in regard to massage, the more potential clients will remember your name and face when the need arises. Remember, not everyone needs to buy car insurance every day, but when they do need it, how many of them think of the Gecko with the English accent? Make yourself memorable. Offer something that sets you apart from your competition. There is usually enough work for everyone, but those that stand out get the lion’s share.
Lastly, be willing to barter your services for things that will further your business. Sometimes a local printing service business owner may need a massage. Why not try to trade a massage for advertising or printing services? This in conjunction with volunteering chair massage at local charity events shows you are in touch with local needs and you genuinely care. A few hours of selfless work speaks volumes to those contemplating massage services.
Above all, don’t set your sights too high! A first time mountain climber will not try to conquer Everest! Success is a ladder that needs every step to take you higher!
May peace and prosperity follow you in all your endeavors!

Darren, thanks for the post. It is good to know that we’re not alone. I’m a male therapist as well, and it is hard to accept that we have a completely different set of realities in the massage world. Business builds slowly, sexism and gender stereotyping are working against us. The most important thing to remember is your craft. Keep perfecting what you do and they will come. Personally, in my first 3 years, I traded off with every RMT I could to learn what they did right. I took 6 courses in different modalities too. It will come. Best of luck.
Darren, I Thought you brought up good points. We have a ways to go to scatter the sexists of jobs and burnout but nicely stated what we can do as holistic practitioners.
I really love your posts. I am a blogger as well and love reading other views of other people of the same things i write about.
